The Queen Gracefully Declines ‘Oldie’ Award With Good Response

The Queen is 95 years old, but she is not yet ready to accept an “oldie”.

The Queen gracefully declined Oldie magazine’s “The Oldie of the Year” award in a letter from her assistant private secretary Tom Laing-Baker and shared it on Tuesday’s Twitter account of the publication.

The humorous award and the annual awards ceremony (also known as TOOTY) recognize older people who have made a significant contribution to public life.

In the letter to entertainer and awards chairman Gyles Brandreth, Laing-Baker praised the awards and explained why the queen did not quite meet “the relevant criteria”.

“Dear Mr. Brandreth, thank you very much for your letter of July 30th to Sir Edward Young asking if the Queen would accept the award as Oldie of the Year,” the August 21st note reads.

“Her Majesty believes you are as old as you feel. The Queen does not think she meets the relevant criteria to be accepted and hopes that you will find a more worthy recipient, ”the letter continues. “This message comes to you with Her Majesty’s best wishes.”

The Queen’s answer fits in perfectly with Oldie Magazine, which, according to editor Harry Mount, is intended to be “a free-thinking, funny magazine” and “a light-hearted alternative to a press obsessed with youth and celebrities”.

The Queen’s husband, the late Prince Philip, was jokingly named Consort of the Year by magazine in 2011. He had an equally funny reaction to “winning”.

“There is nothing like the moral of being reminded that the years go by – faster and faster – and that parts of the old framework are falling off,” the Duke of Edinburgh quipped at the time, according to the Guardian. “But it’s nice to be remembered at all.”

Philip added that at this point he would not be within convenient reach of London to receive the award.

Despite the royals’ reluctance to accept their oldies, the Queen’s daughter-in-law, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall attended the magazine’s awards on Tuesday.
