The People and Nature Survey for England gathers information about people’s experiences and views about the natural environment and their contribution to our health and wellbeing.

This publication reports on a set of weighted national indicators from the survey, compiled with data obtained in August 2021 from a sample of approximately 2,000 adults (16+):

  • Gross number of adult visits
  • % of adults who have spent time outdoors in the past 12 months, by frequency
  • % of children who have spent time outdoors in the past 12 months, by frequency
  • % Of adults who have been outside in the past 14 days
  • % Of adults who have been outside in the last 7 days
  • % Of adults who have been outdoors in the past month by location type (e.g. parks)
  • % of adults agree that natural spaces are good places for mental health and wellbeing
  • % of adults agree that natural spaces are places that promote physical health and exercise
  • % of adults agree that it is important to have access to a private or communal garden, outdoor area or allotment garden
  • % Adults agree I feel part of nature
  • % Adults agree. Being in nature makes me very happy
  • % of adults agree that they take more time to perceive and deal with everyday nature
  • % Of adults engaged in nature since the coronavirus restrictions began
  • % Changes in behavior and attitudes among adults with regard to green and natural spaces since the coronavirus restrictions began
  • % Adults more time for certain activities since the coronavirus restrictions began
  • % Adults who reduce the amount; Time they travel by car, food their household throws away, or eat meat that they have been eating since the coronavirus restrictions began
  • % of adults who have been prevented from spending time outdoors due to certain barriers since the coronavirus restrictions began
  • % of children who have been outdoors and engaged in nature since coronavirus restrictions began, as reported by adults
